STEPHEN DENNIS WOLANSKE, MD   MARCH 6, 1939 – JANUARY 18, 2022

Every birth begins a story, every death creates a history. The ensuing years make a life. Stephen Dennis Wolanske, MD excelled at living his life and leaving our world a better place.

Born in Greenfield, MA to Dr. Stephen and Margaret Mahan Wolanske, he was raised with great affection and encouragement which was generously shared with his brother Robert and sister Linda Wolanske Martin, both of Greenfield. Stephen’s children, Stevie (Greenwich CT), Douglas, and Kristen (Lachance), (Colorado Springs, CO) and their families were deeply loved. He was so proud of their accomplishments and the people they became.

The Doc graduated Boston University School of Medicine in 1966 and completed his Residency at New York Presbyterian. He was born a “Monday’s Child”, Fair of Face, and his beautiful countenance was the first to welcome hundreds of infants at the very beginning of their journey. His long career in obstetrics and gynecology touched many people in their hours of great need. He was devoted to the well-being of each and every one of his patients.

Stephen was blessed to inherit the sparkling eyes of his Irish mother, the glint of his inner joy always present. Forty years ago, the Universe was in perfect alliance, for just a moment, and those eyes found Sherry, (Ez).  It was meant to be. Stephen gained a true soulmate and best friend as well as a loving daughter, Krista Parise Wolanske, who warmed his heart every day of their shared life. It was a special bond like no other. To witness them together was like a fine ballet, with sparks, and much laughter.

All creatures, great and small, recognized his tender heart. Stephen loved animals, and they knew it. He was still mucking stalls at 80 and gathering food for the chickens. His dogs were cherished and quite spoiled.

His Faith was inherent, a regular attendee at Mass, he collected our names for prayer.  Come Sunday, his list was longer than a CVS receipt. He covered the heavy work of Lent for many. We remain grateful for his sacrifice.

Gathering friendships was his greatest gift, he genuinely cared for others. The Doc was the consummate host, manning the grill, tending the bar, engaging in thoughtful conversation, opening his heart and wonderful home to so many, often a motley crew. His ICC gang were his brethren, family, neighbors and restaurant people always cheered when he arrived. His career prepared him well for often being surrounded by a tribe of women, Ez’ entourage. He sat among that group, composed and engaged. Dr. Wolanske, you were so easy to love.

His family is forever thankful to all who made his life rich by your visits, concern, kind words, rides, and meals. To his personal medical staff, who tenderly cared for him in his final hours, Dr. Mike and Elise Edwards, your warm hearts are precious beyond words.

Stephen’s ashes will go to the sea, his spirit carried on gentle tides, and hopefully, touch the warm shores of Ixtapa, a mythical spot for he and Sherry.  Those who remain to complete our journeys will raise a glass, not to mourn, yet rejoice in having been embraced by his generous personality and surrounded by his loving arms.

Good journey Stephen, until we meet again.
