Phyllis Malone, 94, died on February 17, 2021 in Newburyport. She was born on October 13 th and raised in Gloucester, MA and was the last surviving daughter of Louis R. Douglas Sr. and Ethel Johnson Douglas, of Gloucester. She was pre-deceased by her husband, a WWII veteran and Gloucester native, Robert E. Malone and by her brothers Louis Douglas and Rev. Mr. Philip Douglas, and sisters Genevieve Goggin and Irene Brauneis. She leaves her children, Marcie Jean Malone, Robert Douglas Malone, Michael Dean Malone, and Tricia Malone Schade who hold her in their hearts. She also leaves behind her 9 grandchildren, Molly Karcher, Krystal Gray, Jessica Malone-Huff, Lucas Jones, Suzanne Mickelson, Christopher Self, Madeline Malone, Dean Schade, and Ian Schade as well as 10 great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Phyllis and Robert (Bob) were high school sweethearts, as well as being voted “Most Popular” GHS class of 1944. She worked after school at the Boulevard Sweet Shop and Bob would skip lunch so he would have money to buy a chocolate milkshake from her and then walk her home. Phyllis graduated from the Deaconess School of Nursing while Bob was away on his tour of duty in the Pacific. They were married when he came home and were happily married and best friends for 58 years. She was a dedicated ER nurse at Addison Gilbert Hospital for 27 years. In addition, she and Bob were active in both their church work at St. John’s Episcopal Church as well as serving the Gloucester community at-large through their volunteer work with the Red Cross, even running a summer camp for kids.
Her passions included reading, playing cribbage and bridge, her husband, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, any time spent at the beach and the regular monthly get-togethers with her high school friends, “The Club” girls. She was a faithful follower of the NE Patriots as well as the Boston Red Sox. She was full of vivacity, laughter, intelligence, and what her family calls “the Douglas will,” a strength of character all could rely on. She had a huge and lasting positive impact on all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Arrangements: A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
