) Robert Warren Johnson, age 95, formerly a longtime resident of Stoneham, passed away following a brief illness on July 2, 2017, at the Life Care Center in Acton. He was the cherished husband of the late Gloria (Feltmate) Johnson for nearly 70 years.
Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Reginald and Gladys (Conant) Johnson. Robert was raised in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School in the Class of 1940. He was a star pitcher for their baseball team. Bob served in the Army as a platoon sergeant in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre for 22 months during WWII . Following the War, he returned to marry Gloria, his high school sweetheart, and worked as a mailer/foreman for various Boston newspapers, including the Boston Globe, the Record American and the Boston Herald. He was a member of the International Typegraphical Union.
He and Gloria moved to Stoneham in 1947, and were residents there for 68 years. Robert was dedicated to providing and caring for his family. He was an avid Boston sports fan and especially loyal to the Patriots, whether they were winning or loosing. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, reading and visiting family in Nova Scotia.
He was the father of Carol A. Hyson and her husband Lindy of Mahone Bay, NS and Linda R. Curran and her husband Chip of Concord and the late Robert W. Johnson Jr. He is survived by his grandchildren, Matthew and Danielle Hyson, Christopher and Evan Curran. He was the brother of Lester Johnson of Peabody, Dorothy Fuller of Florida and the late Ted Johnson of Winthrop.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 12th at 1 P.M. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 79 Central St., Stoneham, followed by burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Visiting hours are Tuesday, 6-8 P.M. at Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, 4 Common St., Stoneham. Memorial gifts may be made to All Saints’ Episcopal Church or a veterans’ organization of your choice.
